2. Emma's English Learning Diary : Today's entry


"I love experimenting with new recipes, so today I decided to try making a Thai curry for dinner.



As I chopped the vegetables and prepared the ingredients, I looked up some new vocabulary related to cooking, such as 'saute,' 'simmer,' and 'marinate.'



While the curry was cooking, I read a recipe in English and learned some new cooking terms like 'fold in,' 'whisk,' and 'drizzle.'



Exploring new recipes not only improves my cooking skills but also helps expand my English vocabulary."




3. Cooking Vocabulary & Common Expressions + Example Sentence


This list includes key cooking vocabulary and examples to help learners understand and use these terms in context.




(a) Experimenting = Trying out new ideas or methods to discover or test something.




e.g. I love experimenting with new recipes to find exciting flavours.



She loves collecting recipes.

(b) Recipe = A set of instructions for preparing a particular dish, including a list of the ingredients required.



e.g. I found a delicious Thai curry recipe online.







She's chopping vegetables  for the curry.

(c) Chop = To cut something into pieces with repeated sharp blows using a knife.




e.g. I chopped the vegetables into small pieces for the curry.

(d) Ingredients = Any of the foods or substances that are combined to make a particular dish.




e.g. The ingredients for the Thai curry include chicken, coconut milk, and various spices.




(e) Saute = To cook food quickly in a small amount of oil or fat in a pan over high heat.


e.g. First, I saute the onions until they are golden brown.


Simmer over low heat for 5 minutes.

(f) Simmer =To cook something gently just below the boiling point.



e.g.

After adding the coconut milk, let the curry simmer for 20 minutes.









Marinate the chicken for more than 2 hours.

(g) Marinate = To soak food in a seasoned liquid to add flavour.



e.g. I marinate the chicken in a mix of soy sauce and spices before cooking.










Fold in the cream.

(h) Fold in =To gently mix an ingredient into a mixture without deflating it, usually done with a spatula.



e.g. Fold in the whipped cream gently to avoid losing its airiness.








Whisk the eggs throughly.

(i) Whisk = To beat or stir a substance with a light, rapid movement using a whisk.




e.g. Whisk the eggs thoroughly before adding them to the mixture.










Drizzle honey over the dessert.

(j) Drizzle = To pour a thin stream of liquid over food.



e.g. Drizzle some honey over the top of the dessert for added sweetness.
