How to decide what to write in your journal every single day to practise your English?
You may enjoy writing about your day in your journal but sometimes you may need some direction as what to write about.
Vocabulary Check!
Words/ Parts of Speech / Meaning
1. prompt (n.) = ideas for you to write something
2. quotes (n.) = words / phrases from book, movie etc.
3. anecdote (n) = a short, funny story about something someone has done
4. run out (phrasal v.) = no more, none left
The following are some prompts you can use to help you write in a daily journal for your English practice.
i. Quotes and Reflection
Inspirational quotes are great.
Find a quote that inspires you to do something more in your life.
Note it down in your journal and write about how you'll apply it in your life.
The quote could be anything you see online, or from a book or movie.
It could even be a joke or an anecdote shared by a celebrity.
ACTION!
Look at the quote 'follow that dream' in the image.
Are you pursuing a dream at the moment? What is it? How are you going to fulfil your dream? Write in your journal.
ii. Answer Questions
There are a few ways to find questions to answer in your journal.
One way is to collect your own questions on a daily basis.
Write them down as they come to you and save them.
Or you can go to sites where people ask questions and write down interesting ones that you like.
ACTION!
Write down questions you may overhear from people around you, on the train, in a queue, etc. This is a great way to practise asking questions (grammar). Don't forget to answer those questions as you start collecting them.
iii. Personal Life Goals
If you run out of things to write in your journal, why not talk about your goals?
Talk about each of your goals in a separate entry, you don't have to write down all your goals in one entry.
Think about the goal, the steps you have to take to achieve it and how important this goal is to you.
ACTION!
You can start by writing down your English learning goals. Talk about what you've achieved so far, and how you might reach your goals and why it's important to you.
iv. Important Events
These events don't have to be just your personal experiences.
You can write about significant event or famous ones.
You can also choose past wars or death of a famous historical figure or celebrity as topics.
Or maybe you can just talk about events that happened in your community or a nearby town / neighbourhood.
You could also write about a family event like the birth or marriage of a family member and the changes you experience in life.
ACTION!
Maybe you are taking a trip to a country or an exhibition you've always dreamed of visiting. Write in your journal. How do you feel? What are your expectations? etc.
v. Challenges and Solutions
Every day we face challenges in our lives, big and small. It may something at work or family-related. Write about them in your journal.
What happened that made it a challenge?
How did you feel when you had to face it?
Did you overcome the challenge?
How did you overcome it?
Not all challenges can be overcome in a day.
Some will take a period of time - days or even weeks.
ACTION!
You may want to write about possible solutions you can think of to deal with the challenges ahead.
vi. Dreams and Memories
We have dreams and memories during the day.
What about talking about the memory you had during the day?
Try to recall more of the memory and how it made you feel.
Maybe you had an interesting dream the night before. Write it down.
ACTION!
You can look up the meaning of your dreams in a dream dictionary. Talk about it in your journal.
vii. Write About Food
Maybe you're trying to lose weight.
It's often very helpful to keep a food journal of what you ate during the day.
Even if you're not trying to lose weight, it can be fun to talk about new recipes you've tried and food you ate during the day.
ACTION!
Collecting recipes is also another interesting way to improve your food vocabulary. Learn about world food culture, you can journal about types of food & ingredients different from what you're used to.
